Where Robinson broke the line. 220' down the left, 196' down the right, 245' to center — a tribute to the most important debut in American sports history.
The Brooklyn Dodgers played the Boston Braves. It rained. Jackie Robinson went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice and a run scored. The Dodgers won 5-3. And baseball — actually, America — changed.
Number 42 wore that uniform under the Ebbets Field marquee, in a Brooklyn neighborhood that didn't always want him there. He stole home 19 times in his career. He was Rookie of the Year. He was MVP. He was, and is, a singular figure in this country's sporting life.
Our Brooklyn Field is the smallest field on the campus. Its right-field line is just 196 feet — Ebbets Field's was 297, but in spirit, our short porch is the same. We named it Brooklyn so that every kid who plays here learns the name. So that kids ask their coaches who Jackie was. So that the answer matters.
